Club History

How HHISFC came to be

The Hilton Head Island Sportfishing Club was founded back in the early 80's by a group of local charter captains led by Capt. Fuzzy Davis and Capt. Marty Pinkston for the purpose of building offshore artificial reefs. Their first project was the construction of the Fishamerica Reef using the concrete rubble from the old Hilton Head swing bridge.

Sometime after the building of the reefs, the sportfishing club started to fade.  Russell Patterson, a local attorney, stepped in and revived it and created the Hilton Head Reef Foundation as a tax deductible arm for further artificial reef construction.

Since the inception of the Reef Foundation, the sportsfishing club has grown considerably.  The club focuses more on sportsfishing techniques and networking local fisherman, while the HHRF has remained at the frontline of marine fishery conservation.  The two groups function together, remain closely linked, and continue to grow.
